Sofia to Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria

After breakfast this morning we took a taxi to the airport and picked up a rental car. We left Sofia and drove about two hours to Rila Monastery. It is described as the cultural center of Bulgaria. It was founded over a thousand years ago. The sign at the entrance describes it as the Jerusalem of Bulgaria.

We couldn’t take pictures inside the church. I took this through the front door.

From the Monastery we drove to nearby Blogoevgrad, to the Orbita Hotel and Spa where we are tonight. We used the spa and had a great dinner in the restaurant.

The view from our room.
In the spa
Shopska salad
Beef tongue
Rila trout
Tartlets for desert

  1. the monastery was really beautiful and was packed with Bulgarians. It was a beautiful Spring Sunday afternoon. And the hotel and spa are wonderful. Duke wanted to have a massage but couldn’t get an appointment until 2 and we will be on the road by then.
